Roundabout° Tel Aviv Museum of Art, 22 October 2011–29 April 2012

Roundabout° showcased works from the collection of American collectors and art dealers David Teplitzky and Peggy Scott. The couple’s ongoing project involves collecting and commissioning works from seminal and emerging artists from Australasia, the Pacific, Asia, the US, the Middle East, Europe, and Russia—with a strong focus on indigenous work. It is said that the show is designed as a ‘roundabout’, with no single way to navigate it.

Roundaboutº explores the possibilities of artistic exchanges between geographically separated cultures and of different traditions and languages. The full-color catalog was designed by award-winning graphic designer Paul Sahre and features the work of 108 artists from around the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Japan, South Korea, China, India, Bhutan, Tibet and Thailand. It also includes four scholarly essays by Nicholas Thomas, Rupert Richard Arrowsmith, Don J. Cohn and Marisa Mazria-Katz, as well as an interview with Roundabout collector David Teplitzky.

I worked on Roundabout° with David Teplitzky and Peggy Scott over a period of three years, travelling to Shanghai and Beijing, China, USA and frequently to Thailand. I also spent some time introducing David to our New Zealand Māori artists with the purpose of commissioning work that would become part of the curated exhibition. I collated and prepared biographical material and interviewed many of the 108 artists, and became part of the negotiating team that secured support for the exhibitions eventual showing at City Gallery Wellington.
