Pātaka storehouses were built on stilts and traditionally used to keep preserved food such as fish, birds, Kao, or seed safe from kiore or Pacific rats in winter.
This work represents the importance of being able to care for taonga tuku iho (legacy), this pataka representing the ability to protect the mauri (lifeforce) of ongoing taonga (precious items) and matauranga (knowledge) in a modern world
